Four and a half years after unwrapping the slinky WRX concept at the 2013 New York auto show, Subaru has pulled the sheet from another low-slung concept: the Viziv Performance. Unveiled at the 2017 Tokyo auto show, the Viziv Performance concept reportedly signals the company’s plans for the next generation of its WRX sedan.
Low and wide, the Viziv Performance combines hallmark Subaru design cues such as the brand’s hawk-eye headlamp design and hexagonal grille with rally-car-inspired details that include flared fenders and a big hood scoop. Measuring 182.3 inches from stem to stern, the Viziv Performance concept sits on a 107.5-inch wheelbase, 3.2 inches longer than the current WRX’s. And the overall length is up by just 1.4 inches next to today’s WRX, so the concept has far shorter front and rear overhangs than almost any WRX before.
While Subaru doesn’t reveal much about the Viziv Performance concept’s powertrain, it acknowledges that, yes, the engine’s cylinders are horizontally opposed and torque will flow to all four wheels. Given the hood scoop and past practice at Subaru, we’d wager the engine bay would happily accommodate a turbocharger and a top-mounted intercooler.
Although the Viziv Performance’s scoops and big exhaust pipes speak to the enthusiasts in us, safety-minded individuals will be eager to know that the concept also incorporates the brand’s next-generation safety features, including enhancements to the camera-based EyeSight safety system, navigation system, and radar technology.
The 2013 WRX concept fooled us into thinking Subaru’s rally-bred sports sedan was getting some seriously stylish sheetmetal, but the look didn’t translate to production. Let’s hope the company doesn’t pull the same shenanigans again and that this dashing concept is a much more accurate preview of the Rex to come.
